US stock market hours

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq open at 9:30 AM and close at 4:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday to Friday. Around that, electronic trading runs from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM ET, but volume outside the regular session is thin, spreads are wider, and many brokers offer only part of it.

US market hours in UK time

For most of the year New York is five hours behind the UK, so the US stock market opens at 2:30 PM and closes at 9:00 PM UK time. The big US data releases land at 1:30 PM, an hour before the open, and Federal Reserve decisions at 7:00 PM.

For a few weeks a year the gap is four hours and everything happens an hour earlier, because the UK and the US change their clocks on different Sundays. The next ones:

• Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October 2026: the US market opens at 1:30 PM and closes at 8:00 PM UK time.
• Monday 15 March to Thursday 25 March 2027: the US market opens at 1:30 PM and closes at 8:00 PM UK time.

The same weeks apply across most of Europe, which changes its clocks on the same dates as the UK. The live clock at the top of this page warns you when one is coming up, wherever you are.

US market hours around the world

The opening and closing bells for Monday 28 September, on local clocks. Where the time falls on the next day, the day is named.

When the clocks change

New York moves its clocks forward on the second Sunday of March and back on the first Sunday of November. The US open lands at a different local time whenever either side changes its clocks, so depending on where you live it moves twice a year, four times, or not at all if your clocks change on New York's dates.

• The UK and Europe change on the last Sundays of March and October, one to three weeks apart from New York. The US market opens an hour earlier for two or three weeks in March and for one week around the start of November.
• India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, the Gulf and most of Africa don't change their clocks, so the open moves only when New York's does. In India it is 7:00 PM IST while New York is on summer time and 8:00 PM in the US winter.
• Australia and New Zealand change in the opposite direction to New York, so the gap moves by up to two hours over the year. In Sydney the opening bell falls anywhere from 11:30 PM to 1:30 AM, depending on the week.

ES and NQ futures hours

E-mini S&P 500 (ES) and E-mini Nasdaq-100 (NQ) futures, and their micro versions MES and MNQ, trade on CME Globex almost around the clock: from 6:00 PM ET on Sunday to 5:00 PM ET on Friday, with a one-hour break every weekday from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM ET. On CME's own Chicago clock that is 5:00 PM Sunday to 4:00 PM Friday, with the break at 4:00 PM.

Traders split the futures day in two. Regular trading hours (RTH) are 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET, when the stock market is open and volume is heaviest. Extended trading hours (ETH) are everything else, often called the overnight or Globex session. Charting platforms can draw either, and the choice changes numbers like the day's range, which is why published figures for how many points ES and NQ move in a day rarely agree.

Stock market holidays and early closes

NYSE and Nasdaq close for ten holidays in most years and close early, at 1:00 PM ET, on the day after Thanksgiving and on some days before Christmas or Independence Day. These are the dates NYSE has published.

Futures on holidays: ES and NQ usually keep trading on US market holidays but stop early, around 1:00 PM ET, then reopen at 6:00 PM ET for the next day. They are often shut all day on Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Overnight stock trading from December 2026

NYSE Arca and Nasdaq plan to add an overnight session for US stocks, from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM ET, starting on Sunday 6 December 2026. That would leave US stocks shut for just one hour each weekday, from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM ET. The SEC approved Nasdaq's plan in April 2026, but some of the rules needed to run it still await approval, so the date could move. The 9:30 AM open and 4:00 PM close stay where they are, and futures hours don't change. We will update this page when it goes live.

Hours from NYSE, Nasdaq and CME Group. Holiday hours for futures are set by CME shortly before each holiday, and brokers can offer less of the extended session than the exchanges do, so check yours before relying on a time.
